DESCRIPTION
We tour along the coast of Athens known as Athens Riviera heading towards the southest point of Attica where Sounion is located. Known for its important geographical position but also for the ancient temple of Poseidon which lies there. One of the most important sanctuaries of the Ancient Greek civilization. Around the temple there was the settlement of Sounion.
The first written report about Sounion was done in the 9th century BC by Homer. More specifically he mentions that Menelaos on the way back from Troy, he stopped to bury Fronti, the captain of his ship. Afterwards, there were other testimonies. The construction of the temple of Poseidon dates back to the 5th century BC and it was made with marble extracted from Agrileza Lavrio which lies 4 km north of cape Sounion. The quarries where the marble was extracted for the construction of the temple, are in a good condition as well as the ancient road used to transport the marble to cape Sounion.
Sounion was fortified during the Peloponnesian wars and it was considered the strongest fortress of Attica. There were a lot who wanted to conquer it but it was the Athenians who did. Parts of the walls are preserved until today while the surrounding area because of its environmental value has been converted into a national park.
The sunset at Sounion is well-known. Every year thousands of visitors take pictures of the view, the moment that the rays of the sun shine effortlessly as the day ends playing among the columns of the temple. Nobody forgets that view.
Along the way, there are seaside suburbs and settlements near the blue-green water, marinas, resorts, islands, organized sand beaches with blue flags (showing that water is clear) and rocky bays, beach bars and traditional taverns by the sea with fresh fish. There is also a chance for sailing. On the way, we should visit the famous spa lake of Vouliagmeni. This is an experience that every visitor should not miss.
