CORINTH
HISTORICAL TOP GREEK DESTINATION!
Corinth is the capital of the corresponding prefecture of Corinthos (or Korinthos) and it is a continuation of the old town known to the whole world as “Ancient Corinth”. Ancient Corinth was powerful and maybe the richest town of Ancient Greece. It was the seat of the Roman Empire in the East and the place which Apostle Paul visited and stayed for about 2 years. Unfortunately, in 1858 the old town of Corinth was devastated by an earthquake. This led the residents to building a new town about 5 kilometers further at the seashore of the Corinthian gulf.
The current town of Corinth is located at the seashore and almost at the edge of the Isthmus of Corinth. The narrow stretch of land that connects Peloponnesus with Sterea Ellada at the east side of the Corinthian gulf. The climate of the town is Mediterranean having four seasons with mild winters and hot summer. It has an effective road net as it is the main entrance from Attica and Athens to Peloponnesus and it is linked up to two main highways which lead to the central, south and west side of Peloponnesus easily accessing known towns like Nafplion, Tripolis, Kalamata, Patras, Pyrgos and Olympia. There is also connection with rail road transportation and through the port transport by ships is operated carrying the products of local production. The vineyards, lemon trees and orange trees are the main occupation of the local.
The fast growth of transportation came with the completion of the works of Isthmus through which the Corinthian and the Saronic gulfs were connected. A project that was envisaged by the residents of the old town almost 3,000 years ago. That stretch of land was the main reason of the development of the old town and complemented with the ancient port, they were the reasons of the progress of commerce in the Mediterranean as well as towards South Italy.
