DESCRIPTION
Ancient Corinth (or Korinthos) was important and it was the richest town-state of ancient Peloponnesus. Its history starts between 5000-3000 BC. Built at the bottom of Acrocorinth, the rocky hill which is located south west of the contemporary city. On the top of the hill the fortified castle of Acrocorinth was constructed to check the area for invaders and later it become the Acropolis of the city.
It was built at a strategical spot between the Corinthian and the Saronic bay. The spot is called Isthmus and it was the main reason for its commercial and military development that followed. Ancient Corinth controlled the important position of Isthmus and it was the most crucial commercial nexus of the ancient world until it was threatened by Athens. At Isthmus there was Diolkos, a paved way that connected the two edges of the Corinthian Isthmus on which boats were dragged by slaves from the Corinthian to the Saronic bay and vice versa. That was the reason of the economic and military development of Ancient Corinth.
It was point of reference in many myths. It established the famous Isthmian races. Homer reports that Corinth took part in the military campaign of Troy under the leadership of Agamemnon the king of Mycenae. It was here that the trireme, the military vessel with which the Greeks dominated the seas. The Corinthians were a leadership force of the Greek alliance against the Persians and took part in the battle of Salamis and the battle of Plateaus.
However, the intense commercial competition with Athens led to the Peloponnesian wars. Corinth allied with Sparta against Athens. Later, the political clashes led Corinth to ally with Athens and Thebe resulting in confrontation with Sparta and the beginning of the Corinthian war.
Alexander the Great established the alliance of the Greek town against the Persians in Corinth. However, after the death of Alexander the Great the power of Corinth was limited and during the 2nd century BC the Romans invaded and the total destruction of the town followed. The Romans rebuilt it and it was developed as the center of the Roman Empire in the East Mediterranean. Apostle Paul visited Corinth where he lived for about 2 year. That is the reason that Apostle Paul wrote the ‘two letters’ to the Corinthians. Repeated destructions by invaders led to the decline of the city; the latest were the Ottomans until its liberation in 1822 during the Greek Revolution.
Contemporary Corinth continues its commercial development in agriculture producing and exporting grapes, raisin, oranges, lemons, dairy products and wine. It is a unique tourist destination worth visiting. Close by there is the tourist are of Loutraki and the Heraion Lake where there is the ancient temple of Hera.
In the cobbled square of Ancient Corinth, you are given the chance to taste savor and aroma of Greece that the gastronomical delights of the traditional cuisine that travelled through time and raised generations will give you. The town remained unforgettable to the photography lovers for the historical monuments and its treasures, the local culture and the unique architecture of the village that is representative sample of the traditional Peloponnesian civilization.
