Nafplion (or Nafplio) is a town in the Peloponnese, it became the first capital of the Greek state during the period of the Greek Revolution. Today, it is the capital of the prefecture of Argolida. According to mythology the founder was Nauplius, son of Poseidon. It is considered the first organized town of Greece in prehistoric times which was fortified with the famous Cyclopean walls as the archeological artifacts in the area show. Parts of that fortification are salvaged until today. The sanctuary of Poseidon was located on the hill of the town.

Nafplio is famous for Bourtzi which is a small castle built on a small stretch of land near the port. It is also known for Palamidi and Acronauplia (Turkish name Itch-kale) which were Venetian castles. Ioannis Kapodistrias, the first governor of the New Greek state, was murdered in Nafplio. It is a popular destination of the residents of Attica and Peloponnese as it does not take long to arrive there. A visitor can see the beautiful neoclassical buildings of unique architecture of another era which are scattered until today in the old historic town of Nafplio.

There were countless times that the town was invaded by barbarians and pirates. The most prominent conquerors were the Venetians, Francs and Byzantines who stole some of its glory throughout time. There was a period under the Ottomans until the Greek Revolution that brought back the glory of the town of Nafplion with the establishment of the Greek government. It was a strategic place due to its immediate access through sea to the islands of Hydra and Spetses.
