DESCRIPTION
Sparta is built between the mountains Taygetos and Parnonas. It is a unique destination for trekking and climbing lovers on the mountains which are full of evergreens. The field that stretches around Sparta is green with olive trees, orange trees, lemon trees, mulberry trees and other kinds of trees.
Sparta is a mythical town ruled by the king Menelaos, younger brother of the king Agamemnon and husband of Helen of Troy the cause of the Trojan War. Birthplace of heroes and warriors known for the austere way of life without any excessive luxuries. It remained in history for the famous phrase “Μολών λαβέ” (come and get it) and stand up against the Persians, the biggest threat of the Mediterranean during ancient times.
The landscape of Sparta is of unparalleled beauty with scattered traditional villages, ideal for sightseeing next to the river Eurotas. There are ancient caves of everlasting beauty discovered in the area, the most famous of which is the Cave of Diros.
The Laconian land is known for two famous Byzantines castle-towns. The abandoned Byzantine castle of Mystras which during its heyday was a spiritual and cultural center of the area having a lot of wise men, artists and scholars. The castle, the Palace of Despotate, the houses of lords and residents, the monasteries and the churches are maintained in good condition making the traveler go back to another era.
On the contrary, Monemvasia has succeeded in surviving through the centuries and it is still today a castle-town in Greece. It is built on a rock-island connected with the mainland through a bridge. Visitors can experience a fairytale developing fast behind the walls: cobbled alleys, Byzantine churches, beautiful houses with roof tiles and cobbled yards with a view to the sea and narrow alleys. Here the Medieval times and Byzantium merge so that the visitors can taste the same old products like wine, olive oil and silk which were transferred to the West through the area in Medieval times.
The archeological museum of Sparta with artifacts from the Neolithic era and exquisite works of sculpture from the Ancient to the Roman times is worth visiting. In the museum of Elias and the Greek olive oil visitors can learn the history of olive tree and olive oil from ancient times until today. Also, the old stone water fountains where cool water springs are worth visiting. There are also historic castles, fortresses, cobbled alleys, medieval houses, Christian churches and unique priceless treasures in the Museum of Mystras. Visitors should experience tasting local olive products, citrus fruit and delicious smoked with herbs and thyme pork from the surrounding mountains.
Every traveler deserves at least once in a lifetime to come to the Laconian land. It can be YOU!
